From 1994 to 2018, the Sardar Bhagwan Singh Post Graduate Institute of Biomedical Sciences & Research in Balawala, Dehradun, was a pioneering institution in Biomedical Sciences, renowned not only in Uttarakhand but throughout the entire Northern Region. Since its inception, the institute has continuously worked to elevate academic standards.

The institute was born out of the foresight and vision of its Founder Director, Sardar Gurcharan Singh Ji, who dreamed of making the region self-sufficient in higher education. With an outstanding faculty, motivated students, efficient management, and a sprawling campus covering more than 150,000 square feet, SBSPGI celebrated two decades of remarkable achievements.

Established in 2018 under the Sardar Bhagwan Singh University Act, 2016 (Uttarakhand Act No. 12 of 2018), Sardar Bhagwan Singh University has a rich legacy of excellence in Biomedical Sciences. The university, formally notified on August 3, 2018, is now expanding its horizons to include Commerce, Management, Engineering, Agricultural Sciences & Forestry, Basic Sciences, and Languages. This expansion aligns with the career aspirations and opportunities sought by today's young generation.

Mandate
The organization is governed by the Gaurav Bharti Shiksha SansthanSociety, established in 1994. Initially, the society focused on providing quality professional education to students from the Sikh minority community. However, admissions are open to all students, regardless of caste, creed, or religion. The overarching aim is to develop the university into a center of excellence in science and technology, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.

The admission process for Sardar Bhagwan Singh University (SBSU) in Dehradun, India is as follows: 

1. Apply online
Visit the university's website, select a course, pay the application fee, and fill out the application form 
2. Counseling
Admission is based on counseling and marks obtained in the 10+2 exam 
3. Provisional admission
Provisional admission is based on marks obtained in the university's pre-final qualifying exam or entrance test 
4. Merit list
The merit list gives weightage to certain categories, including: 

  • Recipients of the National Talent Award 
  • NCC cadets who have passed the "B" certificate 
  • Students from rural areas 
  • Female candidates 
  • Wards of Olympians 

SBSU is a Sikh Minority University, so 5% of seats in all courses are reserved for Sikh students. To claim these seats, students must submit an affidavit along with the endorsement of the local Gurudwara Management Committee.

A minimum of 50% aggregate marks is required for general category students, while reserved categories may have relaxed criteria as per government regulations.

Admission to the B.Pharm and D.Pharm programs is based on merit or entrance exams such as the Uttarakhand State Entrance Examination (UKSEE) or other recognized entrance exams. M.Pharm candidates are generally admitted based on their GPAT scores or through the institute’s own entrance exam.
