The M. D. S. in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery is a three year Postgraduate program. Oral and maxillofacial surgery is one of the specialties of dentistry to treat many diseases, injuries and defects in the head, neck, face, jaws and the hard and soft tissues of the oral (mouth) and maxillofacial (jaws and face) region.
The objective of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery program is to prepare graduates for a successful and productive career in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The curriculum is designed to develop the clinical, academic, and communicative skills that will provide for diversified career options. A unique feature of this program is graduates will be prepared to pursue contemporary full scope Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery practice.

OMFS is the connecting link between medicine and dentistry. Unlike the other branches of Dentistry OMFS involves additional training in General Medicine, General Surgery, Plastic, and Reconstructive Surgery, Pharmacology, Physiology, and Pathology.

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons often work with various specialists of other departments such as Paediatricians, Medical Oncologists, Plastic surgeons, Surgical Oncologists, ENT surgeons, Orthodontists, Restorative dentists, Radiologists, and Neurosurgeons.
Eligibility
Admission in MDS OMFS is possible only after candidates fulfill certain criteria be eligible for seeking admission in MDS in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery the following eligibility criteria must be satisfied:
- The candidate should have a BDS degree from a university recognized by the UGC.
- The candidate must possess either a Permanent State Dental Council Registration certificate.
- The candidate should have attempted the NEET MDS exam and hold a valid NEET MDS scorecard.
- The candidate must obtain qualifying marks in NEET MDS. The Cutoff scores of NEET MDS (for All India 50% quota) are 50th Percentile for candidates from General and EWS categories, 40th Percentile for OBC, SC, and ST candidates, and 45th Percentile for PwD candidates of General category.

- Oral surgeons can start or join a private clinic where they can perform minor surgical procedures such as extractions, dental implants, and biopsies.
- Oral surgeons can also work as consultants for hospitals such as Apollo, Fortis, and Max Healthcare.
- MDS in OMFS may also pursue a career in academics in private and government colleges.
- MDS in OMFS can also opt for PhD and work in research institutes.
- After MDS OMFS one can also join the armed forces where the starting rank would be of a Major or equivalent.
- Many oral surgeons choose to undergo further training in one specialty of OMFS. Several organizations conduct courses and fellowships for advanced training in craniofacial surgery, craniomaxillofacial trauma, orthognathic surgery, oral cancer surgery, and head and neck surgery.
