The National Medical Commission (NMC) has updated the Undergraduate MBBS Seat Matrix for the academic year 2026-27, incorporating approvals granted by the Medical Assessment & Rating Board (MARB), the NMC First Appeal Committee and the Second Appeal Committee of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.

The public notice was issued on September 21, 2026, and the seat matrix reflects the position as of September 18, 2026. The updated matrix covers MBBS courses across India, excluding seats of Institutes of National Importance (INIs).

NMC MBBS Seat Matrix 2026-27: Key Figures

According to the updated seat matrix, there are 1,40,664 MBBS seats across 839 medical colleges for the 2026-27 academic year.

The matrix records 61,185 renewed government seats with 2,936 increased seats, taking the government total to 64,121. For private colleges, 65,843 renewed seats and 10,700 increased seats bring the private total to 76,543.

3,850 Seats Added Through 41 New Medical Colleges

The NMC has specifically noted that the updated matrix includes 3,850 MBBS seats belonging to 41 newly established medical colleges.

These comprise:

• 13 newly established Government Medical Colleges: 850 seats
• 28 newly established Private Medical Colleges: 3,000 seats

The updated matrix incorporates permissions granted for establishment of new colleges as well as increases in the annual intake capacity of existing MBBS colleges.

NMC Issues Important Instructions for Counselling

The updated seat matrix will be considered by the Central Government and State Government counselling committees for counselling and admission.

Admission beyond the approved annual intake capacity will be treated as non-compliance with the National Medical Commission Act, 2019 and applicable regulations and may attract regulatory and penal action against the concerned medical college or institution.

Seat Matrix May Be Revised

The NMC has also clarified that the updated seat matrix is subject to revision from time to time, depending on decisions of the Appeal Committee or other competent authorities.
