The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued a notice regarding the Seat Matrix for Undergraduate (MBBS) Courses for the academic year 2026-27, excluding Institutes of National Importance (INIs).

The notice, issued by the NMC on September 10, 2026, is based on the updated seat matrix as on September 1, 2026. The matrix incorporates approvals granted by the Medical Assessment & Rating Board (MARB) of NMC, the 1st Appeal Committee of NMC and the 2nd Appeal Committee of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

The updated seat matrix is intended to provide the approved MBBS intake capacity for medical colleges for the 2026-27 academic session.

NMC MBBS Seat Matrix 2026-27 Updated

According to the NMC notice, the enclosed MBBS seat matrix has been updated based on approvals granted by the competent authorities.

The seat matrix covers Undergraduate MBBS courses excluding INIs and reflects the approved seat position as of September 1, 2026.

NMC has clarified that the seat matrix may be revised further, if required, depending on decisions taken by the Appeal Committee or any other competent authority.

The updated matrix is therefore subject to further revision wherever applicable.

Medical Colleges Must Follow Approved Seat Intake

The NMC has issued an important direction to all medical colleges and institutions regarding admissions for the 2026-27 academic session.

All medical colleges have been directed to ensure that admissions are made only against the approved number of MBBS seats for the academic year 2026-27.

Medical colleges cannot admit students beyond their approved intake capacity.

Excess MBBS Admissions May Attract Regulatory and Penal Action

The NMC has warned that any admission made in excess of the approved intake capacity will be treated as non-compliance with the provisions of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, and the regulations framed under the Act.

Such violations may attract appropriate regulatory and penal action against the defaulting medical college or institution.

Medical colleges and other stakeholders have therefore been advised to carefully follow the approved seat matrix while conducting admissions.

Instructions for Medical Counselling Committees

The NMC notice has also been circulated to the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) and the Directorates of Medical Education of all States and Union Territories.

The concerned counselling authorities and medical education departments have been requested to take note of the updated seat matrix and comply with the applicable instructions.

The seat matrix is particularly important for the ongoing NEET UG 2026 counselling and MBBS seat allotment process, as admissions must correspond with the seats approved by the competent authority.
