Ishan Uday

The Ishan Uday Special Scholarship Scheme is an initiative of the University Grants Commission (UGC) aimed at promoting higher education and reducing dropout rates among students belonging to the North Eastern Region (NER) of India.

The scheme provides financial assistance for undergraduate studies in recognized colleges and universities across the country.
It supports economically weaker students, encourages regional growth, and ensures equal access to higher education.

Every year, 10,000 fresh scholarships are awarded to students from all the eight Northeastern states:
Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim, and Tripura.

To be eligible for the Ishan Uday Scholarship, the applicant must:

A. Domicile

  • Be a permanent resident of any of the 8 North-Eastern States.

B. Academic Eligibility

  • Must have passed Class 12 from a school or board located in the North East.

  • Must be admitted to a full-time undergraduate degree program (BA, BSc, BCom, BTech, BCA, etc.) in any recognized college/university.

C. Income Criteria

  • Annual family income must not exceed ?4.5 lakh.

D. Institution Eligibility

  • Must be enrolled in:

    • A university established under a Central, State, or Provincial Act, OR

    • A recognised college affiliated with such universities, OR

    • Institutions recognized under Section 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act, OR

    • Professional/technical institutions approved by regulatory bodies such as AICTE, MCI, DCI, NCTE.

E. Exclusions

The student is not eligible if:

  • Admitted through the Management Quota.

  • Pursuing programs such as Medical, Paramedical, and Technical courses without proper approval from regulatory bodies.

  • Already receiving another UGC or government-funded scholarship.

  • Enrolled in a distance education program.

The scholarship provides a fixed monthly amount for the duration of the undergraduate program:

A. For General Undergraduate Courses

  • 5,400 per month
    (Approximately 64,800 per year)

B. For Professional, Technical, and Specialized Courses

  • 7,800 per month
    (Approximately 93,600 per year)

Duration:

  • The scholarship is provided for the entire duration of the UG course, generally 3 to 5 years (depending on course type).

Mode of Payment:

  • Amount is disbursed directly to the student’s bank account through DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer) on a monthly basis.

Students must upload/submit the following documents:

  • Domicile Certificate of any NER state

  • Income Certificate (family income ≤ ?4.5 lakh)

  • Class 12 Pass Certificate & Marksheet

  • Aadhaar Card

  • Admission Proof / Bonafide Certificate from college

  • Bank Passbook (student’s name, Aadhaar-linked)

  • Caste certificate (if applicable)

  • Passport-size photograph

  • Affiliation/Approval certificate of the institution (if needed)

Step 1: Register on National Scholarship Portal Click here

  • Select “New Registration”.

  • Enter details such as name, date of birth, domicile, gender, etc.

  • Verify mobile number and email ID.

Step 2: Login to NSP

  • Use Application ID and password to log in.

  • Select the scheme: Ishan Uday Special Scholarship for NER.

Step 3: Fill the Application Form

Provide details such as:

  • Personal information

  • Academic qualifications

  • Institution details

  • Bank account information

Step 4: Upload Documents

Upload scanned copies of required documents in prescribed format.

Step 5: Final Submission

  • Carefully check all details.

  • Submit the form online.

Step 6: Verification

The application undergoes:

  1. Institute Verification

  2. State Nodal Officer Verification

  3. UGC Final Approval

Step 7: Disbursement

Approved students receive monthly scholarship directly into their account via DBT.
