Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth (SBV) is a Deemed-to-be-University proud of its modernity and yet firmly entrenched in rich educational heritage and ethos. This Deemed University was established in the year 2008 and ever since has been ceaselessly striving to excel in the frontiers of Academics, Research, Patient care and Outreach services-all enabled  with a view to serving the society.

At present there are two campuses, namely SBV Pondy campus and SBV Chennai campus. One more campus would soon be established at Karaikal that would offer multidisciplinary programmes.

The Deemed University’s constituent units include two Medical Colleges, one Dental College, two Nursing Colleges, School of Pharmacy, School of Biomedical Sciences, School of Physiotherapy and School of Allied Health Sciences.  The regulatory programs are all duly recognized by the respective statutory councils. Whereas, the  innovative curricula synonymous with academic flexibility vested with the Deemed Universities are being promulgated through value additions across the academic programs of Allied Health Sciences. The Institutes of SBV are the Institute of Salutogenesis and Complementary Medicine (with the inherent School of Yoga Therapy Education and Research and the School of Music Therapy Education and Research), Institute of Health Professions Education and Mahatma Gandhi Medical Advanced Research Institute. A state-of-the-art Medical Simulation Centre that is recognized as an International Training Centre by the American Heart Association and the Advanced Surgical Training Research Academy, a cadaveric lab adds further credence to the endeavours of SBV.  

Infusing passion and enthusiasm into the minds of the avid students and nurturing their achievements in order to optimize the potentials is our watchword.  At SBV, reinforcing and augmenting theoretical knowledge gained during didactic lectures with evidence based practice, skills and research are the forte. Patient care as a top priority continues to attract the attention of the stakeholders. Serving the underserved and underprivileged patients epitomizes SBV, where patient care in the broad specialties and super specialties are enabled with the spontaneous and committed support of the auxiliary health care personnel in place.

The visibility of SBV is enhanced by the A++ Grade conferred on it by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). SBV has been successively ranked one among the top 100 Indian Universities, based on the India rankings, released by NIRF for the years  beginning  2016, till 2024. Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (MGMCRI), a constituent unit of SBV figures among the top 50 medical colleges of our country, as per NIRF India rankings 2024. The constituent hospitals of SBV, namely Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (MGMCRI) and Shri Sathya Sai Medical College and Research Institute (SSSMCRI) have received accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare providers (NABH). The molecular diagnostics laboratories housed in the main and off campuses are accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL). SBV’s fight against COVID-19 has been fortified by the commissioning of a dedicated laboratory for carrying out RT-PCR that has received the approbation of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The clinical laboratories at the Pondy and Chennai campuses are accredited by NABL.

SBV has been recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (SIRO) by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India. The School of Biomedical Sciences is a unique and recent concept that is poised to integrate biological sciences with medical sciences. In order to keep pace with the ever changing global scenario and also to take forward the recommendations of the NEP 2020, SBV has embarked on the initiative of infusing the component of multidisciplinary academics and research, with effect from the academic year 2024-25.  

The medical graduates of SBV are eligible to register with any state council or pursue further education in any part of India. Furthermore, SBV ensures that its programs and courses are recognized internationally by registering under appropriate provisions of various statutory and registration authorities around the world to enable its graduates the right to qualify for practice in any nation.

The alumni are proud of their alma mater and give a creditable account of themselves in their chosen disciplines and are recognized for their professional competence, conduct and caliber worldwide. A well-knit Alumni Association carefully nurtures the bonding between the alumni and their alma mater.

SBV is a research oriented deemed university and allocates considerable resources and promotes investment towards need and value based Biomedical Research. In recent years, the Deemed University’s research output has been consistently high in quality and impact as evident from its rapidly evolving research publications records. The cutting edge research and innovation at SBV inspires the teachers and the taught alike. SBV stands out especially in the realms of undergraduate scientific research, a matter of immense pride and gratification, besides the fact that it is worthy of adulation. Totally oriented towards quality in fostering high fidelity research, SBV has an exclusive Deanery for Research headed by an eminent medical researcher. Activities related to intellectual property including Copyrights, Patents and Technology Transfer are in place, besides robust start up policy driven endeavours. The presence of a top notch professional with industry-academia background as the Vice-President of Research, Innovation and Development fortifies the armamentarium.
