Gauhati University has officially commenced the online registration process for the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2026 for admission into the 3-Year Law Programme (LLB) for the academic session 2026. The entrance examination will be conducted for admissions to all universities in Assam, except Dibrugarh University.

Candidates possessing a bachelor's degree from a recognised university with the prescribed minimum qualifying marks are eligible to apply. The online application process started on 23 June 2026, and the last date to submit applications is 30 June 2026.

According to the official notification, the CAT 2026 admit cards will be available for download from 9 July 2026, while the entrance examination will be conducted on 16 July 2026 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM. The merit list will be declared on 24 July 2026.

The examination will consist of 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQs) carrying 400 marks. Candidates will receive 4 marks for every correct answer, while 1 mark will be deducted for each incorrect response. There will be no negative marking for unanswered questions.

The question paper will include sections on General English, General Knowledge & Current Affairs, General Science, Basic Mathematics, Computer Basics, Reasoning, Numerical Ability, Legal Reasoning, and the Indian Constitution.

The examination will be conducted in OMR-based offline mode at multiple centres across Assam, including Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Nagaon, Tezpur, Silchar, Nalbari, Rangia, Kokrajhar, Diphu, Goalpara, Morigaon, Barpeta, Mangaldoi, and Biswanath.

The counselling schedule announced by the university is as follows:

• First Merit List Counselling: 3–4 August 2026
• Second Merit List Counselling: 6–7 August 2026
• Third Merit List Counselling: 10–11 August 2026
• Spot Admission: 13–14 August 2026
• Commencement of Classes: 17 August 2026

The application and entrance examination fee is ?1,500. Reservation and relaxation benefits will be provided according to the Government of Assam norms, while final eligibility verification will be conducted by the respective colleges before admission.
