The Department of School Education and Literacy, Government of Karnataka, has officially withdrawn the late admission penalty fee system for students enrolling in Government Pre-University (PU) Colleges from the 2026–27 academic year. The move comes after the government observed misuse of the earlier provision by some institutions.

Under the previous system, students taking admission after the prescribed deadline were required to pay additional penalty charges. As per the withdrawn rules, students had to pay ?670 as a late admission fee for admissions delayed by 10 days and INR 2,220 as a special late admission fee for delays of 20 days. These charges have now been completely removed for admissions in Government PU Colleges.

The government stated that the earlier penalty provision, introduced in 2018, was being misused by certain colleges, where admissions were granted beyond the prescribed schedule without prior approval and later regularised through penalty fee collection. To prevent such practices, all Government PU Colleges have now been instructed to strictly follow the official admission calendar issued by the department.

The decision is expected to provide significant relief to students, especially those from economically weaker backgrounds, who often face delays in completing admission formalities due to documentation or financial constraints. By removing the additional financial burden, the government aims to ensure that more students are able to continue their higher secondary education without unnecessary expenses.
