The National Medical Commission (NMC) has officially released the MBBS seat matrix for the 2026–27 academic session, confirming a total of 1,36,939 MBBS seats across medical colleges in India. The latest seat matrix includes 9,911 newly added MBBS seats, making it the largest MBBS intake in the country's history.

The increase in seats comes ahead of the NEET UG 2026 counselling process, offering medical aspirants more opportunities for admission into government and private medical colleges.

Highest-Ever MBBS Intake

According to the NMC, the approved seat matrix for 2026–27 reflects significant growth in undergraduate medical education. The additional seats have been created through:

• Approval of new medical colleges.
• Increase in intake capacity at existing medical colleges.
• Expansion of medical education infrastructure across various states.

Government and Private MBBS Seats

The official seat matrix includes:

• Total MBBS Seats: 1,36,939
• Government Medical Colleges: 63,296 seats
• Private Medical Colleges: 73,643 seats

The seat matrix excludes admissions to Institutes of National Importance (INIs) such as AIIMS and JIPMER, which conduct admissions separately through NEET UG counselling.

Big Relief for NEET UG 2026 Aspirants

The increase in MBBS seats is expected to benefit thousands of candidates appearing in NEET UG 2026 by expanding admission opportunities across India. While competition is likely to remain high, the higher intake may improve the availability of seats during the counselling process.
